Opening a bank account as an Au Pair
Opening a bank account
Au pairs who are in the UK for a long time may wish to open a bank account. The host family can then pay the au pair directly into the au pair\'s bank account. Other families prefer to pay the au pair in cash.
If you do want to open a bank account it is usually easier to open an account at a branch where a host parent has an account and it will be easier if you take one of your host parents with you to help fill in the bank forms.
To open an account
Some au pairs have had difficulties opening a bank account. It is at the individual discretion of each bank and the ability to open an account may vary from branch to branch of the same bank.
We contacted some high street banks and asked them what they would require for an au pair to open an account.
Require an au pair to have a full passport and a bank statement from his / her country.
Require an au pair to have a full passport plus a letter from your au pair agency stating that you are an au pair.
Require a full passport, a letter from your host family confirming you are an au pair plus a statement from your bank at home if you have had an account before.
Nat West Bank
Require a full passport plus either a letter from the host family with proof of address, or a letter from the au pair agency confirming that you are an au pair and the host family address.
Royal Bank of Scotland
Require a full passport plus either a letter from the host family with proof of address or a letter from the au pair agency confirming that you are an au pair and the host family address.
If you do open a bank account do make sure you understand the charges. Money paid into a bank account may take several days to clear. You will be charged heavily for going overdrawn even if it is accidental. If you do go overdrawn go and talk to your bank, don\'t just pretend it hasn\'t happened.
